Step-By-Step's trained coaching staff will help you take your training to the next level. |
JOSEPH A. BENCIVENGA |
Founder, President and CFO of Step-by-Step |
Joseph A. Bencivenga has been involved in sponsored, athletic endurance events since 2002. He started by volunteering with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team-in-Training program. In addition to being an active participant in many charitable events, including the Disney Marathons, America’s Most Beautiful Bike Ride in Lake Tahoe, and the Nation’s Triathlon in Washington DC, he’s assisted in directing or co-directing several major events. |
Joe’s active participation in sponsoring and offering endurance training programs for runners, walkers, cyclists, swimmers, and triathletes, demonstrates his overwhelming desire to raise funds to benefit cancer research. These endurance, sporting events are designed to increase awareness, provide support and outreach for those in need, and promote fitness and healthy living. |
Playing an instrumental role in finding a cure for cancer is what prompted Joe to establish the Step-by-Step Charitable Foundation. Its purpose is to provide funding at a local level for patient advocacy groups in order to benefit patients and their families. Joe raises funds by increasing awareness of, and profiling, well-deserving cancer research and funding charities such as the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, American Lung Association, and others like it. |
Mr. Bencivenga serves as President/CFO of the Step-By-Step Charitable Foundation. He and his family reside in Carle Place, Long Island where he is an active member of the community. |
Marilyn Southerton |
Running Coach Health & Wellness Advisor |
One of our new Running Coaches, Marilyn has recently become certified in Nutrition and is our expert Health and Wellness Advisor. What separates her from the rest of the pack is that she is a two time Breast Cancer survivor. Having run a full NYC marathon and numerous half-marathons around the US, Marilyn has found running to be the best therapy overcoming medical issues and stress for her.
“I literally ran into Step-by-Step last summer (2015) at the Bethpage State Park on the running path! I felt as if it was one of those ‘what are the chances’ moments; running into a team that works towards such a great cause. I feel that running is not just a great way of staying healthy, but also a great way of meeting amazing people. A few months ago when Joe asked me to join the Team as a running coach, I was truly moved!"
"After going through my treatments, I realized how important nutrition and exercise play a role in healing. I not only want to help Step-by-Step with their charitable efforts, but also help each team member gain confidence and feel the benefits of nutrition and running!”
MEET OUR TEAM |
Barbara Bencivenga |
VP, Treasurer |
Barbara has been involved with Step-by-Step Charitable Foundation since it's inauguration in 2010. She has been involved with all aspects of the organization, including being named Treasurer in 2011.
Barbara has helped raise funds by running various Half Marathons, including the Long Island Half Marathon and the Walt Disney World Half Marathon. She hopes to keep raising her level of support by bringing awareness to several underfunded cancers, and helping to raise funds for these devastating diseases. She, along with others, hope that one day Step-by-Step will play an important role in KILLING cancer.
Linda Simone |
Board Secretary |
Linda has been an active participant in Step-by-Step’s running events over the last few years. She’s now part of our volunteer board of directors and helping to shape the future of the organization.
Linda says that, “I think the most important reason I started running was for the challenge. I never saw myself as a runner, but after doing my first half-marathon, I knew I had it in me to keep going and really push myself to be even better. I joined Step-by-Step because I wanted to help in any way I could. I saw all the good work that the organization was doing and how passionate Joe Bencivenga was about it. It really hits home when cancer surrounds us all on some level, and I wanted to help make even a small difference if I could.
Maria Fasulo |
Maria spent over 28 years in healthcare sales, advertising, and medical education working in many drug categories, including anti-infectives, CNS, and oncology. In her own small way, it was a place to help patients through driving product awareness and knowledge to healthcare professionals about key pharmaceutical drugs.
She joined Step-by-Step in 2013 after she stopped working to manage healthcare for her family. Her dad was diagnosed with colorectal cancer and then her mom was diagnosed with lung cancer. The reality of cancer hit home hard-and personally-and she wanted to help other patients and families in similar situations.
Volunteering at SBS allowed her to bring her experience and expertise in healthcare communications to the non-profit world. She participates every year in the American Lung Association’s Fight for Air Climb in honor of her mom, and cheers on the many SBS Team Members as they run in events to help raise funds for defeating cancer!
"If you want to become the best runner you can be, start now. Don't spend the rest of your life wondering if you can do it." -Priscilla Welch |
